Clean, fresh, multi-functional with planters and a pergola
Following an extensive extension to their home, our clients were left with a sizeable garden that had understandably taken a battering during the building work. While the space had plenty of potential, it needed a complete transformation to bring it back to life and create a garden that complemented their newly extended home.
Working closely with our clients, we spent time discussing how they wanted to use the garden, the look and feel they were hoping to achieve, and the practical requirements of the space. After several conversations and design ideas, we developed a plan that combined a contemporary aesthetic with a range of versatile areas for entertaining, relaxing and enjoying the garden.
The brief was for a modern, clean and low-maintenance garden, with porcelain paving providing a crisp, contemporary finish. Decorative planters were incorporated throughout the design to soften the hard landscaping and introduce structure and greenery.
A Garden Designed for Entertaining
At the heart of the garden, we created a large focal area designed specifically for outdoor dining and socialising. Composite decking was chosen for this central space, providing a warm contrast to the porcelain paving while offering excellent durability and minimal maintenance.
The result is a welcoming area that works perfectly for everything from family meals and summer drinks to larger gatherings with friends.
To the left of the garden, a second porcelain-paved area provides another versatile outdoor space. This is framed by a beautiful oak-beamed pergola, creating a striking architectural feature and a sheltered area that can be used in a variety of ways. Our clients envisaged the space being used for BBQs, a fire pit and relaxed evenings outdoors, making it a particularly flexible part of the garden.
Privacy, Planting & Detail
Along the opposite boundary, we created a long raised planter area incorporating bamboo planting to provide both greenery and increased privacy. The tall, architectural form of the bamboo works particularly well against the contemporary landscaping.
White decorative shingle was used alongside the planting, creating a clean, modern contrast and adding an attractive finishing detail to the garden. Together, the bamboo and shingle create a visually striking approach leading towards the back door, helping to draw the eye through the garden.
Lighting for Day & Night
Lighting was also an important part of the design. A combination of uplighters, decking lights and carefully positioned spotlights was installed throughout the garden to highlight key features and provide practical illumination after dark.
This means the garden doesn't simply disappear when the sun goes down. The lighting brings the different areas, planting and landscaping to life in the evening, creating an entirely different atmosphere and allowing the space to be enjoyed well into the night.
The Finished Garden
What began as a garden heavily disrupted by an extensive building project has been transformed into a stylish, contemporary and highly versatile outdoor space.
With porcelain paving, composite decking, an oak-beamed pergola, carefully considered planting, decorative finishes and extensive garden lighting, every element has been designed to work together.
The finished result is a garden that not only complements the newly extended home but provides our clients with a range of beautiful spaces for dining, entertaining, relaxing and enjoying outdoor living throughout the day and into the evening.
